Ubuntu 13.10

Install VMware Tools

The following steps will install VMware Tools on Ubuntu 13.10.

NOTE: I've done this after installing Nagios Core so all the pre-requisites like perl are already installed.

  • Establish an SSH session to the guest
  • Initiate the VMware Tools installer from VMware Workstation / vSphere Client
  • Type sudo -i and press Enter
  • Type mkdir /mnt/cdrom and press Enter
  • Type mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom and press Enter
  • Type cd /tmp and press Enter
  • Type tar xzf /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools*.tar.gz and press Enter
  • Type umount /dev/cdrom and press Enter
  • End the VMware Tools installer from VMware Workstation / vSphere Client
  • Type cd vmware-tools-distrib and press Enter
  • Type ./vmware-install.pl and press Enter
  • You'll be prompted for many options, press Enter to accept the defaults
  • When it has completed, you should notice in VMware Workstation / vSphere Client that VMware Tools is now running for this guest
  • Type reboot and press Enter
  • Wait for the guest to reboot
  • After the guest has rebooted, you should notice in VMware Workstation / vSphere Client that VMware Tools is now running for this guest
This completes the VMware Tools installation.
